In Short: Koei’s scraping of the Dynasty Warriors barrel breaks through the bottom and into the floor below, with a cheap, lazy sequel to an already sub-par game. For fans of video games though this has nothing to offer you. So at least fans of the anime or Dynasty Warriors won’t be denied their pleasure. The only silver lining we can find in all this is that it does at least prove that almost every Japanese game, no matter how niche or how low quality, is now being released in the UK. There’s also an online mode for the first time, but we never found anyone to play with.
The best thing about it is the alternative Dream mode, which offers a few original scenarios (and we do use the word ‘original’ in its loosest sense) describing the backstory of various heroes and villains, including a handful of new playable characters. But then as far as we’re concerned almost everything about the game is indefensible. Which isn’t to say the game’s easy as such, as many of the bosses and harder enemies blatantly cheat – blocking your combos but then using their own that can’t be blocked by you. When you’re being mobbed by dozens of enemies at a time, which is always Dynasty Warrior’s signature tricks, you don’t even have to look at the screen to win. You have very few normal attacks and so just mashing them and the dodge button (which now completely replaces the ability to jump) can get you through almost every fight. And on top of the already weak graphics the game is filled with bugs, with some horribly unpredictable collision detection.Īnd yet despite all this the most serious problem with the game is simply how mindlessly simplistic it all is. In fact costs seem to have been cut across the board, with cheap-looking talking head cut scenes that would shame a SNES game and no English voice-acting option. There are a few new chapters, adapted from more obscure chapters of the manga, but these feature notably less detailed backdrops than the rest of the game. In fact the only changes are usually for the worse, with many of the boss fights being inexplicably simplified from the original. Not only are the same characters in the same situations but, presumably because they’re trying to be true to the anime, they’ve only seen the most minor visual upgrades and usually no changes in their moves or abilities. So we find it very hard to believe that Koei couldn’t have found something else to do other than have the Legend mode play out almost identically to the first game. We’re not that familiar with the source material but a quick bit of research shows that there were 109 episodes of the anime. The first problem is that the story is exactly the same as the original. But that’s only half the problem here, as in Ken’s Rage 2 what isn’t exactly the same is usually considerably worse than it’s predecessor. One of the major complaints about the Dynasty Warriors series, other than its ultra shallow gameplay, is that there are so manyalmost indistinguishable sequels. With hundreds of cannon fodder bad guys to wail on and a special move already built into the story it’s prime fodder for video game adaptation. Although in this case there’s less driving around in cool looking custom cars and more of moody hero Kenshiro travelling the post-apocalyptic land, righting wrongs with his secret instant death martial art. First Of The North Star is a famous ‘80s manga and anime that was heavily influenced by Mad Max.
